REUNIÓN ANUAL DEL CIRCUÑO DE CAMARADERÍA ADMIRAL GRAF SPEE EN ARGENTINA - 2020
Nos reunimos el domingo 20 de diciembre de un día soleado, ventoso pero no caluroso, por suerte. El Cementerio Alemán estaba en paz más que nunca. Esta vez, en aras del protocolo (virus) nos situamos frente al monumento que rememora a todos aquellos que cayeron en las guerras. En un atril, el cuadro con la fotografía del Comandante del Graf Spee.
Nos acompañaron el Embajador de Gran Bretaña, Mark Kent, el ministro Dr. Ralf Horlemann, a cargo de los asuntos económicos de la embajada alemana, el agregado de defensa de Gran Bretaña, comodoro Michael Lavender OBE, RAF y la adjunta del agregado de defensa alemán, Suboficial mayor de la marina alemana, Christina Winkler. Por parte de la familia Spee, estuvieron presentes la viuda del marinero Hofmann, Benedicta, los hijos de tripulantes, Enrique Dick, Ernesto Fricke, Federico Jakobs y Guillermo Bräutigam, así como Belén y Mariela, nietas de marineros. En sólida presencia, los familiares y amigos del Círculo de camaradería, conformaron unas 35 personas. Para darle a esta celebración el contexto musical adecuado, dos damas tocaron flautas mientras la Guardia Escocesa daba su nota característica con la gaita.
El mensaje de la familia Nedden-Langsdorff fue leído en su totalidad, escuchamos palabras emotivas del embajador Mark Kent y quien les escribe, manifestó las palabras de cierre:
Nunca pierdo la oportunidad de estar frente a la tumba que es el lugar de descanso del capitán de navío Hans Langsdorff, y pienso: “Capitán Langsdorff, gracias. Nunca lo olvidaremos y un día sus cualidades de hombre de mar y caballero recibirán el reconocimiento que merece”. Sin embargo, de algo podemos estar seguros: las vidas que partieron a la eternidad ese día hace 81 años, no fueron en vano. Después de todo, esa es la razón por la que hoy estamos aquí como amigos en todo el mundo.
Luego escuchamos el minuto de silencio p
ara honrar a los muertos en todas las guerras sin excepción, y finalmente cantamos "Yo tenía un camarada".
Desde allí nos desplazamos en columna hacia las tumbas donde descansan el capitán Hans Langsdorff y cuatro miembros de su tripulación. Colocamos coronas y ramos de flores: el ramo de la familia Nedden-Langsdorff fue colocado por la suboficial Winkler y Guillermo Bräutigam y las flores del Círculo Graf Spee fueron ubicadas por Ernesto Fricke y Federico Jacobs. También colocamos ramos de flores en las tumbas del Capitán Hepe y el Cabo Karl Fengler. Finalizado este homenaje, nos encaminamos hacia el Cementerio británico, donde Karin Langemeyr y Belen Dick, en nombre de los integrantes de la cofradía del Graf Spee, ubicaron flores en la tumba del marinero de primera J.T. Frederick del HMS Exeter. Finalmente, retornamos al Cementerio alemán donde se llevó a cabo un refrigerio y se ofrecieron recuerdos (libros) a los invitados: Mark Kent, Ralf Horlemann, Lavender y Winkler, más el premio del concurso 2020, ganador absoluto, Guillermo Bräutigam.
El almuerzo previsto en Olivos no pudo realizarse por clausura del comedor y las cocina, ante pérdidas de gas.

My limited abilities in German skills disqualifies me from sensible comment on Kaak's book but I am not impressed. Kaak does not clarify Langsdorff's immense contribution to Germany's national and naval identity.
It seems Raeder's navy still nurses a guilt complex due to their scandalous mishandling of actions following the captain's death.
Hans Langsdorff was a brilliant military officer, totally dedicated to his nation and the plans and wishes of his naval chief (Raeder). And committed to a reasonable, sensible responsibility for human life.
Please note: Kriegstagbuch pages #169 (26th November) until #208 (10th December) clearly explain serious problems with Spee's engines. Also, that SKL had operational control of the vessel. On December 6 (KTB p196) SKL issued new locations to Altmark, in accordance with a possible River Plate action. The original intention to get Spee home in January for engine repairs was altered by SKL - not Captain Langsdorff.
On December 6, (KTB p#197) Spee was spotted by "the ship in the night". A couple of years ago I checked the records in the port of Montevideo. "MV Beacon Grange" drew my attention as a logical candidate to be in position at the time and place described by Spee observers. Twenty-four hours later, on December 7 (KTB p#201), Spee's radio overhears much British traffic, including contact between Cerrito (Montevideo) and Falklands. Perhaps this explains the amazing, almost impossible trip of Cumberland to arrive at Montevideo.
I am reading a book "The Demon of Politics" by Holger H. Herwig that explains Hess's and Hitler's interest in Geopolitics. Raeder was hoping to command a battle-fleet to protect a new German Empire that would include the Mediterranean. This maybe his logic in ordering six H-class battleships.
I will try to sketch a small article to bring my thoughts up to date.

We met on Sunday December 20th a sunny day, windy but not hot, luckily. This time, for the sake of protocol (virus) in front of the memorial, we focused on those who fell in wars. We were joined by the Ambassador of Great
Britain, Mark Kent, and the minister Dr. Ralf Horlemann, responsible for the economic affairs of the German embassy, the defense attaché of Great Britain, Group Captain Michael Lavender OBE, RAF and the deputy of the German defense attaché, staff officer Christina Winkler. From the side of the Spee family, the widow of the sailor Hofmann, Benedicta, the children of the crew members Enrique Dick, Ernesto Fricke, Federico Jakobs and Guillermo Bräutigam as well as Belén and Mariela, granddaughters of sailors, were also present. With us, the relatives and friends of the Spee Association, about 35 people participated in the ceremony. To give this cel
ebration the right musical setting, two ladies played flutes while the Scots Guards gave their notes with the bagpipes.
The message of Nedden-Langsdorff family was read in full, we heard words from Ambassador Mark Kent and I meant the last words.
I never miss the opportunit
y to stand in front of the grave that Langsdorff's resting place suggests, and I meditate: “Captain Hans Langsdorff, thank you. We will never forget you and one day your qualities as a seaman and a gentleman will receive the widespread recognition they deserve”. However, one thing we can be sure of: the lives that left that day 81 years ago were not lost in vain. After all, you are the reason why we are here today as friends from all over the world.
Then we heard the minute of silence to honour those who had perished in all wars without exception, and finally we sang "I had a comrade".
From there we moved in a column of one person and kept our distance from the graves where Captain Hans Langsdorff and four members of his crew rest. We place wreaths and bouquets of flowers. The bouquet of the Nedden-Langsdorff family was laid by Staff Officer Winkler and Guillermo Bräutigam and the flowers of the Graf Spee Association were given by Ernesto Fricke and Federico Jacobs. We also placed bouquets of flowers at the graves of Captain Hepe and Corporal Karl Fengler. Then, we went to the British cemetery, where Karin Langemeyr and Belen Dick, on behalf of the Graf Spee Association, offer flowers on the grave of Able Seaman J.T. Frederick from HMS Exeter laid down. We finally ended up in the German cemetery where a snack was held and souvenirs (books) were offered to guests.

Wir trafen uns am Sonntag, dem 20. Dezember eines sonnigen Tages, windig, aber nicht heiß, zum Glück. Dieses Mal konzentrierten wir uns aus Gründen des Protokolls (Virus) vor dem Denkmal auf diejenigen, die in Kriegen gefallen sind. Zu uns gesellten sich der Botschafter von Großbritannien, Mark Kent, der Gesandter, Dr. Ralf Horlemann, der für die wirtschaftlichen Angelegenheiten der deutschen Botschaft zuständig ist, der Verteidigungsattaché von Großbritannien, Oberst Michael Lavender OBE, RAF und die Stellvertreterin des deutschen Verteidigungsattachés, Stabsbootsmansmaat Cristina Winkler. emanns Hofmann, Benedicta, die Kinder der Besatzungsmitglieder Enrique Dick, Ernesto Fricke, Federico Jakobs und Guillermo Bräu
tigam sowie Belén und Mariela, Enkelinnen von Seeleuten. Mit uns, die Verwandten und Freunden des Kameradenkreises, in den Allgemein etwa 25 Personen teil. Um diese Feier den richtigen musikalischen Rahmen zu geben, spielten zwei Damen Flöten, während die Scots Guards ihre Note mit dem Dudelsack gaben.
Eure Nachricht wurde ganz gelesen, wir hörten Worte vom Botschafter Mark Kent und ich bedeutete die letzten Worte:
Ich verpasse aber nie die Gelegenheit, vor dem Grab zu stehen, das Langsdorff`s Ruhestätte andeute, und überlege: „Kapitän Hans Langsdorff, danke. Wir werdensie nie vergessen, und eines Tages werden Ihre Qualitä
ten als Seemann und als Gentleman die umfassender Anerkennung erhalten, die sie verdienen“. Eines können wir uns jedoch sicher sein: Die Leben, die an diesem Tag vor 81 Jahre abgereist gingen, wurden nicht umsonst verloren. Sie sind schließlich der Grund, warum wir heute als Freunde aus der ganzen Welt hier zusammen sind.
Dann hörten wir die Minute des Schweigens um diejenigen zu ehren, die ausnahmslos in allen Kriegen gefallen waren, und sangen schließlich "Ich hatte einen Kameraden".
Von dort bewegten wir uns in einer Kolonne von einer Person und hielten Abstand zu den Gräbern, in denen Kapitän Hans Langsdorff und vier Mitglieder seiner Besatzung ruhen. Wir platzieren Kränze und Blumensträuße. Der Strauß der Familie Nedden-Langsdorff wurde von Stabsbootsmansmaat Winkler und Guillermo Bräutigam gelegt, und die Blumen des Kreises Graf Spee wurde
n von Ernesto Fricke und Federico Jacobs abgegeben. Wir haben auch Blumensträuße an die Gräber von Kapitän Hepe und Matrosengefreiter Karl Fengler gelegt. Wir gingen dann zum britischen Friedhof, wo Karin Langemeyr und Belen Dick im Auftrag des Speekreises Blumen auf das Grab von Able Seaman J.T. Frederick vom HMS Exeter legten. Wir landeten endlich auf dem deutschen Friedhof, wo ein Imbiss abgehalten wurde und den Gästen Souvenirs (Bücher) angeboten wurden.
